Afri-Can Food Basket working to eliminate food security in our community.

Since its founding in 1995, Afri-Can FoodBasket (AFB) has been a Black-led, Black-serving, and Black-mandated (B3) organization pioneering a progressive food movement. We champion reducing hunger, enhancing cultural food access, and promoting health and wellness through food and nutrition initiatives within the GTA’s African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities.

We spoke with Executive Director Zakiya Tafari about their current programs, and how people can get involved through donations, volunteering or monetary support.

The Afri-Can FoodBasket is a dynamic Toronto-based organization that addresses food insecurity and food justice in Black and underserved communities. Founded in 1995, this non-profit is dedicated to promoting food sovereignty by providing fresh, culturally appropriate food and empowering communities through education, advocacy, and urban agriculture initiatives. With a strong commitment to equity, the Afri-Can FoodBasket is a pioneering force for sustainable food solutions in Toronto.
