On this episode of Caribbean Vibrations, we sit down for a one-on-one with Grammy-award-winning artist Buju Banton, who was in town as part of his North American Overcomer tour.
On his first visit to Canada in 15 years, we talked with Buju about the adversities he has faced throughout his career, his special connection to Canada and his thoughts on the status of reggae music worldwide.
Buju Banton is a renowned Jamaican singer who specializes in dancehall, ragga, and reggae. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Jamaican music. Over the years, Banton has collaborated with a diverse range of international artists, spanning genres like hip-hop, Latin, and punk rock, including notable partnerships with the sons of Bob Marley.
Banton began releasing dancehall singles as early as 1987 but rose to prominence in 1992 with the release of two albums, Stamina Daddy and Mr. Mention, the latter becoming Jamaica’s best-selling album at the time. That same year, he set a new record for the most No. 1 singles in Jamaica, surpassing the previous record held by Bob Marley and the Wailers. In 1993, he signed with Mercury Records and released Voice of Jamaica. By the mid-1990s, Banton’s music shifted toward a deeper influence from his Rastafari faith, reflected in his iconic albums ‘Til Shiloh and Inna Heights.
