Caribbean Vibrations, Canada’s longest-running Caribbean television series, has always been dedicated to telling authentic stories that reflect the vibrant cultures and lived experiences of the Caribbean diaspora. This year, the program is proud to announce an important new partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Ontario to launch a multi-part special series on Dementia in the Afro-Caribbean Community. The series premiered on September 27th on OMNI Television, just days after World Alzheimer’s Day, and promises to shine a much-needed spotlight on the realities of dementia within Afro-Caribbean families. While dementia is a global health issue affecting millions, the experiences of Afro-Caribbean communities are often overlooked in mainstream conversations. This new series aims to change that by creating a platform where Afro-Caribbean voices—experts, caregivers, and community members—can be heard, respected, and valued.
Why This Series Matters
Dementia affects more than memory—it touches every aspect of life for individuals, families, and communities. For Afro-Caribbean families, cultural stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to culturally relevant care often make the journey even more challenging. Many caregivers carry heavy emotional and financial burdens, often in silence, without knowing where to turn for resources or support.
By addressing these issues head-on, this series hopes to create space for dialogue, education, and healing. Viewers will gain insights not only into the medical realities of dementia but also into the social, cultural, and emotional challenges faced by Afro-Caribbean families navigating this disease.
