Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month: A Legacy of Excellence, Culture and Global Influence

Every June, communities across North America celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month, recognizing the remarkable contributions of Caribbean people and the Caribbean diaspora to society. From politics and business to entertainment and sports, Caribbean descendants continue to make a significant impact on the world stage while proudly embracing their roots.

The Caribbean is a region rich in diversity, resilience, creativity, and innovation. Its influence can be found in music, food, literature, entrepreneurship, athletics, and public service. Caribbean Heritage Month provides an opportunity to honour the generations who built communities abroad while maintaining strong connections to the islands they call home.

As we celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month 2026, we highlight four outstanding individuals of Caribbean heritage whose accomplishments continue to inspire future generations.

Jamaica and Politics: Kamala Harris

One of the most recognizable political figures with Caribbean roots is Kamala Harris. The former Vice President of the United States is the daughter of Jamaican economist Donald Harris and Indian cancer researcher Shyamala Gopalan. Harris has often spoken about the influence of her father’s Jamaican heritage and the values instilled in her through her family. (The Guardian)

Throughout her career, Harris has broken barriers as the first woman, first Black American, and first person of Caribbean and South Asian descent to serve in the nation’s second-highest office. Her success represents the growing influence of Caribbean-Americans in shaping public policy and leadership across North America.

For many Jamaicans at home and abroad, Harris symbolizes the possibilities that emerge when Caribbean determination meets opportunity. (The Guardian)

Barbados and Business: Rihanna

Through the launch of Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty, and several other ventures, Rihanna built a global business empire worth billions of dollars while promoting diversity and inclusion within the beauty and fashion industries.
