Comedian White Yardies’ work to help those affected by Hurricane Beryl

We spoke with Comedian White Yardie about his efforts to help people in Jamaica who were displaced by Hurricane Beryl. White Yardie, a social media influencer who grew up in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica shared that the severity of the disaster inspired him to contribute to the parish’s recovery efforts.

Hurricane Beryl was a deadly and destructive tropical cyclone that struck parts of the Caribbean, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the United States Gulf Coast in late June and early July 2024. It became the earliest-forming Category 5 hurricane on record and only the second such storm in July, following Hurricane Emily in 2005. Beryl was also the most powerful hurricane to form in the Atlantic’s Main Development Region (MDR) before July. As the second named storm, first hurricane, first major hurricane, and one of two Category 5 hurricanes of the 2024 Atlantic season, Beryl set multiple records for its early formation and unprecedented intensity.

Hurricane Beryl in 2024 significantly impacted several Caribbean islands, including:

– Grenada: The islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique were devastated, with the entire population affected.

– St. Vincent and the Grenadines: On Union Island, 90% of homes were affected, and nearly all buildings on Canouan sustained damage.

– Jamaica: The hurricane caused massive power outages and forced many residents to relocate.

– Barbados: The storm’s powerful winds tore roofs from buildings and uprooted trees, leading to significant devastation.

– Saint Lucia: The island experienced severe weather conditions, resulting in damage to infrastructure and homes.

White Yardie is a popular Jamaican-British comedian, actor, and social media influencer. Born in the United Kingdom, he grew up in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, and strongly identifies with Jamaican culture, which heavily influences his comedic style.
