The Heritage Singers Canada is a Toronto-based nonprofit multicultural ensemble founded in 1977 by Grace Carter Henry-Lyons. Dedicated to preserving and performing Caribbean folklore music, the group showcases traditional songs from Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, and across the Caribbean diaspora.
For more than four decades, this distinguished ensemble has entertained hundreds of thousands of people—while educating audiences on the rich cultural history of the Caribbean.
A Remarkable Beginning Rooted in Tradition
Interestingly, the group’s formation was almost accidental. In Jamaica, it was a cherished Christmas tradition to gather with friends, play the piano, and sing festive songs. When Grace Carter Henry-Lyons moved to Canada, she continued this custom by inviting friends over to share music and community.
That simple tradition soon took an unexpected turn. After being invited to perform at an event, the group quickly came together—hurriedly creating what they jokingly called “Casper the Ghost” costumes. From that spontaneous performance, Heritage Singers Canada was born, and the rest is history.
