Martha Brae River in Jamaica | A Peaceful Bamboo Raft Adventure

Discover Dominica

When you think of Jamaica, images of turquoise waters, reggae rhythms, and golden sunsets come to mind. But tucked away in the lush parish of Trelawny lies an experience that captures the very soul of the island—bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae River.

We got the chance to take a raft down the beautiful and serene Martha Brae River located in Trelawny, Jamaica. This is truly a great way to take in the nature of the beautiful island of Jamaica.

Just three miles inland from the historic town of Falmouth, the Martha Brae offers one of Jamaica’s most serene and unforgettable adventures. Whether you’re seeking romance, relaxation, or a unique connection with nature, this tranquil river journey is a must-do for any visitor to the island.

The Experience

Your adventure begins at Rafter’s Village, a charming welcome point complete with tropical gardens, souvenir shops, and even a herb garden showcasing Jamaica’s traditional healing plants. From here, you’ll step onto a handcrafted 30-foot bamboo raft, designed for two passengers and expertly guided by a licensed raft captain.

The ride drifts along a gentle three-mile stretch of emerald-green water shaded by overhanging trees. Lasting about 75 minutes, the journey is as calming as it is captivating. The only sounds you’ll hear are the soft splash of the pole pushing the raft forward, the call of tropical birds, and the occasional story shared by your captain.

Folklore & Culture Along the Way

The Martha Brae River is more than a natural wonder—it’s steeped in folklore. According to legend, a Taíno woman named Martha Brae tricked Spanish colonisers into searching for hidden gold, then used her magic to change the course of the river, drowning them and sealing its secrets forever.

As you glide downstream, your raft captain may share these tales along with insights into Jamaican history, local culture, and even let you try your hand at guiding the raft yourself.
