Remembering Dr. Juliet Daniel, Founder of the Kaiso Gene

This evening, it saddened my heart to hear of the passing of my good friend Dr. Juliet Daniel, a Professor in the Department of Biology and the Associate Dean of Research & External Relations in the Faculty of Science, at McMaster University.

I first met Dr Juliet Daniel at the UWI Alumni Awards, and I was immediately intrigued by her vast knowledge and the fact that she had named a gene, the Kaiso gene. I mean, for real.

From that moment on, we became colleagues and had the opportunity to collaborate through her organization, the Canada-Caribbean Institute.

She was incredibly proud of promoting STEM in the Black community and inspiring more young people to get involved.

I’m going to miss our conversations about calypso and our talks over who had travelled more (her by a long shot).

I’m blessed to have gotten a chance to know her as well as document part of the legacy that she is leaving behind.

Thank you for being such a cool friend and a brilliant scientist.

You will be deeply missed.
