Wild Nature Retreats: Where Community Care Meets Caribbean Soul

Along the banks of the Nottawasaga River in Ontario, on Anishnabeg territory, sits BlackHouse—a 54-acre sanctuary where wild nature meets intentional community, where Caribbean culinary traditions nourish body and soul, and where healing happens through connection to land, self, and each other.

Created by Ana Silva and Carl Cassell, Wild Nature Retreats emerged from a personal journey of burnout and transformation. What began as a weekend escape for a busy family running two Toronto restaurants, a construction company, and raising five children, evolved into a vision for communal healing. They fell in love with the forest, and Wild Nature Retreats was born from that forest floor—a space to share their experience with friends and community.

Community Care at the Centre

At Wild Nature Retreats, community isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the foundation of everything we offer. Healing doesn’t happen in isolation; it unfolds in the spaces between us, in shared stories around fire pits, in laughter echoing through forest trails, in the quiet understanding that passes between strangers who become family.

Our Sister Talk retreats, co-hosted with Karlyn Percil-Mercieca of SisterTalk Group Collective, provide sacred spaces for women to gather, connect, and experience the pleasure of presence together. These aren’t structured workshops with rigid agendas—they’re invitations to show up as you are, rest, be creative and reconnect to joy practices in the moment. Whether it’s forest bathing, enjoying a garden-to-table lunch by the pool, or time to swim, nap, read, or simply be, these gatherings honour the medicine of sisterhood practice and the power of collective care.

We believe rest isn’t a luxury—it’s a birthright. In a world that glorifies busy, we’re creating a counter-culture of slowness where your exhaustion is welcomed and your need to do nothing is honoured. Our Caregivers and Community Access Fund ensures that everyone, especially caregivers, has access to nature and restoration.

Caribbean Culinary Heritage as Medicine

Food at Wild Nature Retreats carries Caribbean soul—vibrant, nourishing, rooted in cultural tradition, and prepared with intention. Every meal becomes a ceremony that grounds participants in place, heritage, and the understanding that what we eat is inseparable from how we heal.

Carl Cassell, Jamaican-Canadian artist, builder, and restaurateur, brought his Caribbean heritage to Toronto through Irie Food Joint and Harlem Restaurant, creating cultural hubs that nourished Toronto’s Black arts community for over a decade. His culinary philosophy—honouring Afro-Caribbean and Afro-American traditions while embracing bold innovation—now infuses the retreat experience at Wild Nature Retreats.

Debbie Blair, culinary artist extraordinaire, brings deep respect for Caribbean flavours, techniques, and the ritual of food preparation to our table. Her approach recognises that cooking itself is healing, that the sharing of meals is sacred, and that Caribbean foodways carry both nutritional wisdom and ancestral memory.

From the healing properties of turmeric and ginger to the grounding sustenance of provisions, callaloo, and garden-fresh vegetables, every ingredient is chosen with care. Garden-to-table meals feature produce harvested that very morning from our organic vegetable and flower gardens, connecting retreat participants directly to the land that feeds them. This is food that tells stories, that connects generations, that feeds both body and spirit.

Forest Therapy and Elemental Care

Ana Silva, Forest Therapy Guide and Yoga Teacher, co-founded Wild Nature Retreats to share the transformative power of nature connection. Her guided forest therapy walks invite participants to slow down, engage all five senses, and remember their place within the wild tapestry of life.

Forest therapy, known as Shinrin-yoku, is the intentional practice of immersing in natural environments for healing. Research confirms what Indigenous peoples have always known—time in forests reduces stress hormones, boosts immune function, improves mood, and restores overall well-being.

Our elemental care offerings honour the understanding that we are beings composed of earth, water, fire, air, and spirit. At Wild Nature Retreats, this includes forest walks through 54 acres of woodland, community garden stewardship, saltwater pool, cold plunge, steam room and wood-burning sauna, fire pits for gathering, yoga on the dewy lawn, and breathwork sessions. Each element supports your journey back to balance and wholeness.

BlackHouse: Eco-Architecture as Art

BlackHouse isn’t just where you stay—it’s a masterpiece of eco-architecture that proves sustainability and beauty are inseparable. Built by artist and builder Carl Cassell, this shipping container home represents his innovative vision for construction that honours the earth.

Constructed from 20 shipping containers, recycled refrigerator doors, a rescued spiral staircase, and endless creative ingenuity, BlackHouse was guided by the land itself. The structure includes:

  • 10 unique bedrooms, each with its own character and private deck—from the “Yes Room” to the “Treehouse Room,” every space invites rest and reflection
  • 2,000 square feet of flexible communal spaces designed for gathering, movement, and shared meals
  • 8 bathrooms ensuring comfort for groups
  • Natural materials throughout, with repurposed and elemental materials creating energy that is both grounding and inspiring

The eco-architectural principles extend beyond the building to encompass the entire retreat infrastructure—from the wood-burning sauna, steam room, and saltwater pool to the organic gardens that provide food while regenerating soil. Every design choice reflects a commitment to minimal environmental impact and maximum connection to the natural surroundings.

BlackHouse blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor, allowing nature to remain present no matter where you are in the space. Decks extend from bedrooms into the forest canopy. Windows frame views of wildflower meadows. The spiral staircase, rescued and reimagined, connects levels while telling its own story of renewal.

2026 Retreat Experiences

Threaded Homes—An Invitation: A Sistertalk Group Retreat

Co-hosted with Karlyn Percil-Mercieca of Sister Talk Group, these gatherings provide a space for women to reconnect with themselves, each other, and ancestral wisdom. In 2026, Sister Talk retreats include weekend immersions and day events set in nature, with sauna, cold plunge, saltwater pool, and garden-to-table Caribbean meals. These retreats invite presence and reflection without agenda or expectation.

Sister Talk gatherings are not workshops; they are invitations to explore identity as an ecology, practice Cultural Authorship, and rebuild trust within our lineages and communities. Guided by our Culturally Rooted Emotional Intelligence frameworks and sisterhood practice principles, and held by nature, women create new realities from their cultural strengths and wisdom for future generations.

Body Breath Yoga

Our Body Breath Yoga offerings honour the sacred connection between body, mind, and spirit. Through mindful movement, intentional breathwork, and presence-based practice, participants reconnect with their physical wisdom and inner knowing. Whether on the dewy morning lawn or in our communal spaces, these sessions integrate the healing power of yoga with the medicine of nature, creating space for transformation and embodied awareness.

Creative Rest Retreats

Designed for artists, makers, and anyone seeking to restore their creative spirit, our Creative Rest Retreats honour the truth that creativity flourishes in spaciousness. These multi-day experiences blend restorative practices with gentle creative exploration—art therapy sessions, nature-inspired creativity, journaling by the fire, and abundant unstructured time to simply be. Nourished by Caribbean-inspired meals and held by forest medicine, participants leave with renewed creative energy and permission to rest as a radical act.

Solstice Celebrations

Led by Erin Moe, these seasonal day events honour the land and the turning of the seasons. Join us to mark sacred transitions with ceremony, nature connection, garden-to-table meals, and elemental care. Community gathers to celebrate summer’s abundance and winter’s return of light together.

Custom Group Experiences

BlackHouse can be booked exclusively for family gatherings, friend groups, corporate teams, or celebrations. The space welcomes large groups for weekends of leisure, nature connection, rest, and play—with access to all amenities, including the pool, sauna, fire pits, hammock groves, and 54 acres to roam. Design your own experience or work with our team to create a custom retreat that meets your group’s unique needs.

Throughout all offerings, the emphasis remains on organic unfolding rather than rigid scheduling. Everything is an invitation only. You’re encouraged to find your own joy and creativity—whether that’s lying in a hammock, walking forest trails, playing soccer on the field, relaxing in the steam room, or swimming in the pool.

A Movement Toward Wholeness

Wild Nature Retreats represents more than weekend getaways—it’s a philosophy, a practice, a homecoming. By bringing all creative expressions to one place through art, food, movement, stillness, and nature connection, Ana and Carl hope to inspire others to live their boldest dreams.

The modalities offered weave together: Forest Therapy, Elemental Care (seasonal), Hatha Yoga, Wholistic Nutrition, Mindfulness Meditation, Purpose Elemental Readings, Ancestral Ceremony, Art Therapy, and more. Each practice honours the understanding that healing happens in layers, that transformation takes time, and that the wilderness itself is the primary teacher.

In partnership with visionaries like Karlyn Percil (Sister Talk), Carl Cassell (artist, builder, restaurateur), Debbie Blair (culinary artist), and Ana Silva (Forest Therapy Guide and co-founder), Wild Nature Retreats creates spaces where Caribbean vibrations meet forest medicine, where ancient practices inform contemporary healing, and where every person who arrives as a guest leaves as family.

An Invitation to Remember

We all have a wild nature, and we believe that to be a good thing. Wild is where joy, creativity, and love live. Being part of the natural world means we’re connected to every living creature, from the earth to the sky.

Wild Nature Retreats invites you to remember you are as wild as the flowers, the birds, and the untamed pathways of nature. To remember that rest is sacred. To remember that healing happens in connection to the land, to each other, to yourself.

The forest is calling. The community is gathering. The table is set with Caribbean soul.
